Ask Colonial Joe: What is Boston Like?

Take a Boston English Class, Learn a Global Language

If you have an employer who's looking for English-speaking employees, coming to Boston to take an English class is definitely worth your while. Boston is a huge business community as is, so while you could get a great education at a Boston English school, you could also practice it in an established business community. I'm sure this is something you could convince your employer of. He or she may be readily willing to pay your tuition if he or she knew what a great investment it would be.

The great thing about a Boston English class is that it puts you in a community that resembles American life and can teach you American values. Sure, Boston may be a unique and vastly different city than other American metropolises, but still, there are strong elements of the American lifestyle here which you can absorb during your stay. This is one of the most important parts of traveling to a new country: working your way into and understanding the culture.

While it may be overwhelming to try to learn English so quickly, keep in mind that there are many other things to learn here as well. You'll be able to participate in many events that enrich your life and may be able to be applied to future business opportunities. So keep your eyes and ears open for events that may not seem appealing at first, or may be too tiring to attend with everything you have going on. It may turn out that these events will broaden your horizons in a deeply satisfying way.

Your Boston English class will help you with the basics but you'll have to take it upon yourself to explore the area and really get a sense from that experience of what Boston is all about. There's a lot of history here as well as a very established business community and active nightlife scene so be sure to explore these regions so as to take optimal advantage of what's offered.

One obstacle in learning a new language is the slang, since what you learn about conversation will often be different from what you pick up from locals. Try to be patient and actually, try to speak with locals whenever possible. It may prove more valuable than looking to your English school for advice about how best to converse with people in your community.
